Terra Cotta Tour of New York City

For over 40 years, Boston Valley Terra Cotta has collaborated with architects, building owners, and contractors to manufacture terra cotta façades for New York City, both the restoration of historic landmarked architecture and construction of supertall new-build structures. In a city that boasts a diverse architectural landscape, where buildings clad in metal, glass, stone, and brick define its urban environment, terra cotta stands out for its ability to emulate various building materials through manipulation of form, glaze, and finish.

Architectural terra cotta gained popularity from the late 1800s to the 1930s due to its lightweight, fire-resistant properties, and its capacity to be intricately molded for ornamental purposes. Terra cotta is also resilient against severe climates, offering excellent freeze-thaw and UV resistance for a coastal region. Despite the introduction of new façade materials since its peak, few have come to surpass terra cotta in longevity, aesthetics, and sustainability. Its versatility in shape, texture, and finishes, along with its compatibility with other building materials, make terra cotta a preferred choice for many designers.

Whether observing completed projects, or ongoing developments, the city showcases the breadth of Boston Valley’s contributions. The portfolios below include both new construction and significant terra cotta restorations throughout New York City.
