Olde Country Masonry Ltd. has been recognized for their work on the Union Club with a Trade Contractor Award at the 2019 Vancouver Island Construction Association Awards. Boston Valley Terra Cotta provided the terra cotta for the restoration of the historic 1913 building, located in Victoria, British Columbia. Terra cotta masonry for the structure was manufactured to replace elements on the deteriorated façade, bringing the building to its original glory. In the article, a detailed scope of the restoration is listed in addition to challenges faced when installing and replacing masonry on a building’s façade.
Among the work done was the careful dismantling of the building’s terra cotta while cataloging the various elements so they could be carefully pinned back together, patched along cracks, sanded, stained and installed to original state. Decorative rosettes were installed in openings left void for nearly 100 years.
Note: The article incorrectly identifies Boston Valley Terra Cotta as the original supplier of terra cotta for the Union Club. The factory manufactured terra cotta for the recent 2015–16 restoration.
