John Krouse to present at Zak World of Façades in Toronto
Boston Valley’s CEO John Krouse is scheduled to present at the Zak World of Façades conference in Toronto, Canada on May 19th, 2022. The event will showcase sustainable innovations and challenges in the construction industry pertaining to the building envelope, and will display the latest technological solutions from leading providers.
John Krouse will discuss how architectural terra cotta can be manufactured to meet the demands of complex buildings due to the material’s flexibility and eco-friendly nature. Attendees will learn why terra cotta is a great solution for high-performance façades as John takes an in-depth look at four Boston Valley projects: Elgin & Winter Garden Theatre, One King West Hotel & Residence, Vaughn Civic Center, and The Well (currently under construction).

At the time of construction, Vaughn Civic Center was the first modern building in the Toronto area to feature a terra cotta rainscreen.
Considered an “innovative” construction material in the 1900s, architectural ceramics can easily adapt to a variety of rainscreen and architectural masonry applications. John Krouse will explain how Boston Valley is changing the face of terra cotta with details on some of our past Canadian projects. For The Well, Toronto’s largest active construction site, Boston Valley met the architect’s profile, glaze, and finish requirements to give the façade a “crafted” look and complement the historic King Street West neighborhood. For a new build such as the Vaughn Civic Center, we developed 5 new custom profiles and 3,780 individual extruded louvers to create the Toronto area’s first modern terra cotta rainscreen in 2011.

Three custom glaze colors, in soft shades of white, were developed to give a natural, blended look to The Well façade.
Attendees of the conference on 5/19 will be able to learn more about the benefits of architectural terra cotta for both new build and historical restoration, and have the opportunity to earn 8 AIA LU/HSW credits.
