The campus of Rice University in Houston has long been a mix of historic and modern architectural elements. Anchoring its legacy in the Academic Quadrangle is the newly inaugurated Cannady Hall, a 22,000-square-foot facility that highlights innovation in architectural design. Named after esteemed professor emeritus William T. Cannady, this addition to the School of Architecture celebrates both tradition and modern craftsmanship, with its distinctive use of glazed terra cotta as a design element.
Cannady Hall, designed by Zurich-based firm Karamuk Kuo, bridges the old and new with the application of Boston Valley Terra Cotta TerraClad® panels. The rainscreen system is composed of glazed terra cotta panels in three different profiles.
“It’s a sustainable, biodegradable material that needs no maintenance,” architect Jeanette Kuo explained about the choice of terra cotta. “With its color and changing cadences, it references the surrounding brick buildings and their decorative friezes while presenting a new image.” (Architectural Record)
Boston Valley’s scope of work included fabricating 5,625 SF of TerraClad® panels and 355 LF of louvers, with a total of four unique profile dies. The panels were fastened using our horizontal track and clip attachment system. Boston Valley contracted with installer W.W. Bartlett, Inc. for this project.
